Sony has recently released a firmware update for its popular WH-1000XM5 headphones, aligning them with the new WF-1000XM5 earbuds features. This update brings some exciting changes to the headphones, most notably the introduction of head-tracking spatial audio.

With the firmware update, users will now be able to enjoy a more immersive audio experience thanks to the support for head-tracking spatial audio. By tracking the movement of the user’s head, the headphones can adjust the audio output to create a more realistic and three-dimensional sound environment.

However, it’s important to note that in order to fully take advantage of this feature, users will need a phone running Android 13 or later, as well as compatible video apps that support dynamic head tracking. This limitation may disappoint some users who do not have access to phones with the latest operating system.

In addition to the head-tracking spatial audio, the firmware update also addresses another common concern among WH-1000XM5 owners. Previously, users had to choose between multipoint connectivity and LDAC Bluetooth codec. However, the latest update allows for both to be used simultaneously, providing a more versatile and convenient experience.

While many users are excited about these new features, the dynamic head tracking feature remains controversial. Some users have expressed skepticism about its value, questioning whether it truly enhances the listening experience. It seems that the reception of this feature varies among individuals.

Moreover, the availability of the dynamic head tracking feature also depends on the phone being used. Certain phones may have better compatibility and performance with this feature than others, further adding to the complexities.

It’s important to note that for now, the firmware update is only available for the WH-1000XM5 headphones. There has been no confirmation yet regarding whether this update will be extended to other Sony headphone models.

Overall, Sony’s latest firmware update brings some exciting changes to the WH-1000XM5 headphones. With the addition of head-tracking spatial audio and the ability to simultaneously use multipoint connectivity and LDAC Bluetooth codec, users can enjoy a more immersive and versatile audio experience. However, the controversy surrounding the dynamic head tracking feature and the limitations tied to phone compatibility highlight that personal preferences and technological constraints play a role in determining the value of these updates.
