Bernardo Arévalo, a prominent candidate in Guatemala’s upcoming presidential race, is gaining traction with his promise to eradicate corruption and tackle the underlying issues driving migration to the United States. The people of Guatemala, who have long suffered from corruption, poverty, and limited opportunities, are rallying behind Arévalo’s campaign.

If elected, Arévalo could greatly influence the approach of the Biden administration towards the migration crisis at the southern border. He aims to collaborate with the United States in order to combat corruption and promote development within Guatemala. This partnership could potentially pave the way for new strategies to address the root causes of migration.

Arévalo’s father, Juan José Arévalo, was the first democratically elected president of Guatemala. However, his presidency was cut short in 1954 when he was overthrown in a coup backed by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). Now, Bernardo Arévalo seeks to revive his father’s legacy and bring about meaningful change.

The Biden administration has been grappling with finding effective solutions to address the root causes of migration from Central America due to resistance from corrupt elites in the region. However, an Arévalo victory in the upcoming election could potentially open up new avenues for collaboration between the United States and Guatemala. This collaboration could encompass issues such as strengthening border enforcement and creating legal pathways for migration.

Arévalo’s candidacy symbolizes hope for the Guatemalan people who have endured generations of corruption and inequality. His campaign offers the possibility of a brighter future, one where the root causes of migration are addressed and opportunities for progress are expanded within the country.

As the presidential race in Guatemala unfolds, the outcome holds great significance for both Guatemalans and the United States. The potential collaboration between the two nations could pave the way for a more effective and comprehensive approach to addressing the migration crisis. The hope for change has ignited among the Guatemalan population, who eagerly anticipate the possibility of a leader like Arévalo who will fight against corruption and address the systemic issues that have plagued their country for far too long.
