Android 14 Set to Give Users Control Over Full-Screen Notifications

In a bid to provide users with greater control over their smartphone experience, Android 14 will introduce a groundbreaking feature. This feature will allow users to revoke the USE_FULL_SCREEN_INTENT permission, which is granted to certain apps for displaying full-screen notifications. These notifications, which cover the entire screen, often include alarms or incoming calls.

The introduction of this feature is a direct response to the growing concern over intrusive full-screen ads pushed out by apps. Users will now have the ability to deny this permission, thereby preventing apps from bombarding them with full-screen ads.

Starting with Android 14, Google will stop granting the USE_FULL_SCREEN_INTENT permission by default to newly installed apps. However, there will be exceptions for phone dialer and alarm clock apps, which will still be allowed to utilize this permission.

Unfortunately, for users who have apps installed prior to the release of Android 14, they will need to manually revoke the permission to stop them from displaying full-page content. To simplify this process, Android 14 will feature a menu titled “Manage full-screen intents” in the Settings page. From this menu, users can toggle the permission for each app, deciding whether or not they want the app to have the ability to display full-screen notifications or ads.

It is worth noting that going through all installed apps to revoke the permission might be time-consuming. However, for those who want to reduce unwanted full-page content, the effort is unquestionably worth it. With the introduction of this feature, users can regain control over their smartphone experience, allowing for a more seamless and ad-free interaction with their devices.

As Android 14 sets out to provide users with a comprehensive suite of features, the ability to manage full-screen notifications takes a step toward empowering smartphone users and offering them the liberty to decide what content they are exposed to.
