As The White House Turns: Comey Is History, McMaster Is Reportedly On The Outs

It’s never a dull moment in the Trump White House. As rival factions within the administration continue to butt heads, the casualties are beginning to mount. Embattled FBI Director James Comey was officially relieved of his duties today, and if tensions continue to mount, national security advisor H.R. McMaster may be the next to get the axe.

“While I appreciate you informing me, on three separate occasions, that I am not under investigation,” Trump wrote in a public letter addressed to Comey informing him that he was terminated. “I nevertheless concur with the judgment of the Department of Justice that you are not able to effectively lead the Bureau.”

Trump’s decision was accompanied by a public statement from Attorney General Jeff Sessions laying out the groundwork for Comey’s immediate dismissal. If reports can be believed, McMaster’s days may be numbered within the Trump administration. A Bloomberg report indicates that although Washington D.C. loves McMaster, Trump is quickly souring on the man.

The Bloomberg report stated that “the faction of the White House loyal to senior strategist Steve Bannon is convinced McMaster is trying to trick the president into the kind of nation building that Trump campaigned against.” Additionally, the report claims that “McMaster’s allies and adversaries inside the White House tell me that Trump is disillusioned with him. This professional military officer has failed to read the president — by not giving him a chance to ask questions during briefings, at times even lecturing Trump.”

The tensions came to a head with Trump allegedly screaming at McMaster and accusing him of deliberately sabotaging his diplomatic policies regarding South Korea. It remains to be seen whether McMaster can remove himself from Trump’s dog house, or he just may find himself on the unemployment line next to Comey.
