Rand Paul Gets Roll Call Vote On Failed Health Care Amendment, But Will His Gamble Pay Off?

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) was undecided about whether to vote to move forward debate on repealing and replacing Obamacare in the Senate until the last minute. Before the vote, he hopped off the fence to join Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) in proceeding debate after receiving assurances that his amendment for a clean repeal would receive a vote. McConnell actually lived up to his word, and Paul got his wish. A vote for the amendment to repeal Obamacare was taken yesterday, and it was voted down by a 45-55 margin. Sens. Lamar Alexander (R-TN), Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), Susan Collins (R-ME), Dean Heller (R-NV), John McCain (R-AZ), Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and Rob Portman (R-OH) voted against the amendment. Most of those legislators had previously voted to repeal when they understood it had no real chance of passing during the Obama administration. Paul was certainly able to get many turncoats on the record to expose their hypocrisy, but his move to push forward debate could ultimately result in an… Keep Reading

Paul, Trump In Close Coordination On Health Care, McConnell Displeased

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) and President Donald Trump have lately emerged as close political allies, and continue to be involved in discussions pertaining to the Obamacare repeal legislation, much to the chagrin of Republican establishment figures both within the Senate and the White House, according to a Friday report by Burgess Everett and Josh Dawsey in Politico. The article states that several White House officials and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell have “long since given up on” winning over Sen. Paul’s vote for the repeal effort, with McConnell describing Paul as a “lost cause”. Despite this, Trump is continuing to push adamantly for Paul’s stamp of approval due to their close personal relationship. According to an aide close to Paul, Trump would like the ultimate bill to “move a little more to Rand Paul’s views.” Keep Reading

Rand Paul: “I’m Trying To Negotiate With The President”, But “Senate Leadership Is Not Negotiating”

Sen. Rand Paul told CNN’s ‘Newsroom’ Monday that while he is currently negotiating with President Donald Trump on the Affordable Health Care Act (AHCA), which aims to repeal and replace Obamacare, the Senate leadership is refusing to negotiate. Sen. Paul stated that he had talked on the phone with the President about the bill over the weekend. “We had an extensive discussion about all of the ramifications, which way the leadership’s taking it, which way the conservatives want to take it, which way the moderates want to take it, and what I told him that would get me on board, and I think we had a very frank discussion about this. I told him if we narrow the focus – let’s just say we aren’t going to fix everything. In fact, I don’t think everything is fixable in the health care bill. Let’s say we’re going to repeal as much as we can of Obamacare, and then we’re going to work with the Democrats over the next six months to try… Keep Reading

Huckabee-Sanders Addresses Trump Tweets, Obamacare Repeal In Off-Camera Briefing

“I don’t think it was a game,” Deputy Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee-Sanders said in response to a question about President Trump’s tweet on potential Comey recordings approximately 40 days ago. At today’s White House press briefing, correspondents were focused on receiving answers about a recent tweet by President Trump that stated: “With all of the recently reported electronic surveillance, intercepts, and unmasking and illegal leaking of information, I have no idea whether there are ‘tapes’ or recordings of my conversations with James Comey, but I did not make, and do not have, any such recordings.” One reporter asked Huckabee-Sanders why it took so long for the President to “lay [this claim] to rest”, and she responded bluntly: “You guys asked for an answer… [and] he gave you one.” Keep Reading
