Conservative Senators Form a United Front Against Senate Health Care Reform

A conservative bloc of Senators is taking a stand to save the Republican health care legislation from becoming another big government boondoggle. While President Trump and Senate GOP leaders debate about how many mandates and giveaways they will put in the new legislation, Sens. Rand Paul (R-KY), Ted Cruz (R-TX), Ron Johnson (R-WI), and Mike Lee (R-UT) have other plans. The four men released a joint statement on Thursday saying, “Currently, for a variety of reasons, we are not ready to vote for this bill, but we are open to negotiation and obtaining more information before it is brought to the floor. There are provisions in this draft that represent an improvement to our current health care system, but it does not appear this draft as written will accomplish the most important promise that we made to Americans: to repeal Obamacare and lower their health care costs.” Keep Reading

Rand Paul: “New Entitlements” In Senate Healthcare Bill Must Be Stopped!

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) narrowly avoided tragedy this week after a gunman shot up a congressional baseball practice, leaving a colleague in critical condition and wounding several others. This tragedy has not stopped Paul from doing his job, and warning the American public about devastating changes to the healthcare bill. “I think we shouldn’t have new entitlements that will go on forever in a Republican plan to fix healthcare,” Paul said to reporters today. “We can’t pay for what we already have: Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security.” A revised version of the American Health Care Act (AHCA) passed the House earlier this year but not without controversy. President Trump started a public fight against the House Freedom Caucus, and sided with House Majority Leader Paul Ryan (R-WI) to push a bill that essentially re-branded Obamacare. A compromise bill was eventually passed, but apparently Trump is lobbying the Senate for more government control. Trump told Senate Republicans earlier this week that the AHCA version passed by the House was a… Keep Reading

Paul, Lee Only Senators To Stand With Trump Administration On Russia Sanctions

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) and Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) were the only Senators in either party to support the Trump administration’s position on Russia sanctions on Wednesday. Although the White House has yet to take an official position on the bill, their displeasure with it is clear. It is said that the administration’s objection to the Senate bill was principally grounded in the fact it prevents the President negotiating any downgrade in sanctions without the approval of Congress. President Trump, who often emphasizes his negotiating skills, was no doubt disappointed about having this issue taken out of his hands. This was further emphasized by the fact that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson told the Senate, “what I wouldn’t want to do is close the channels off”, and Deputy Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee added that the administration believed the “existing executive branch sanctions regime” was sufficient. The State Department also made clear its intention “to look for areas in which both parties can work together”, such as working “together to fight… Keep Reading

Sen. Mike Lee Leads Coalition To Ban Indefinite Detention Without a Trial, Restore Bill Of Rights

The 2012 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), still in effect today, was passed and signed into law containing provisions allowing for the indefinite detention of American citizens without due process. A new bipartisan effort being spearheaded by Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) would restore 6th Amendment of the Constitution. “America should never waver in vigilantly pursuing those who would commit, or plot to commit, acts of treason against our country,” Lee said in press release about the bill. “But the federal government should not be allowed to indefinitely imprison any American on the mere accusation of treason without affording them the due process guaranteed by our Constitution.” The Due Process Guarantee Act was introduced last week by Lee and fellow primary sponsor Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA). Sens. Ted Cruz (R-TX), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), Susan Collins (R-ME), and Chris Coons (D-DE) have signed onto the bill as co-sponsors as well. Keep Reading

Sen. Mike Lee To Trump: Quit Funneling Taxpayer Money To George Soros!

Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) has been very vocal in his criticisms of President Trump, going back to the dysfunctional campaign season that put Trump at bitter odds with Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX). Now, Lee is trying to warn Trump that taxpayer funds are being funneled directly into the pockets of his sworn enemies. “Whatever one’s views about abortion, energy regulation, alternative family structures, they are neither core international priorities of the American people, nor essential to American national security. They are domestic political controversies, pet causes of a sort of privileged, globalist elite,” Lee said in a speech at The Heritage Foundation this week. Sen. Lee and Trump were at odds for the greater part of 2016. Lee, a top proponent of Sen. Cruz’ presidential campaign last year, was one of the main people leading the charge against Trump on the floor of last year’s contentious Republican National Convention. Since then, tensions have eased and both men are focused on similar goals. Keep Reading

Coup At Heritage Foundation: Freedom Caucus-aligned DeMint To Be Ousted By Establishment

Former Senator Jim DeMint is set to be imminently ousted from his position as President of the Heritage Foundation according to a new report by Politico. Heritage board members aligned with the Republican establishment are set to announce they will not renew DeMint’s contract, which ends later this year, within the coming days. During the Bush administration, the Heritage Foundation was broadly supportive of the Republican establishment, providing strong support for Bush’s foreign and domestic policies. DeMint resigned his Senate seat in 2013 in order to take his current position at the Heritage Foundation, and has since radically shifted the organization to the right. Keep Reading

Cruz To Liberty Movement: No Softballs

Nearly two weeks ago, just prior to his appearance at Steve King’s Iowa Freedom Summit, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz carved out some time to meet with leading liberty activists from around Iowa. The low-key meeting, held in Des Moines, was many activists’ first time to meet the libertarian-leaning Tea Party firebrand. It was also Cruz’s first time fielding questions from a crowd comprised almost exclusively of members of the thriving Iowa Liberty Movement. Cruz opened with high praise for former Rep. Ron Paul’s rapidly-maturing political army. “The power, the energy of the Liberty Movement is inspirational,” said Cruz. “I think it is starting to change the almost inevitable currents of Washington.” He went on to discuss his appreciation for libertarian thinkers like Hayek, Bastiat, and von Mises, keying on areas of agreement with his audience. Cruz, who recently challenged Republicans to “lighten up a little”, also threw in some of his characteristically disarming humor. Admitting himself to be a “geek” while discussing his high school pursuits, the 44-year-old Senator… Keep Reading
