Jury Nullification Saves Bundy Ranch Patriots From Prison Time

Four individuals who participated in the Bundy Ranch stand-off in 2014 were acquitted today of most charges. They were charged with threatening and assaulting federal agents because they carried assault rifles and participated in rancher Cliven Bundy’s massive stand against federal tyranny that nearly turned bloody for all participants. Ricky Lovelien and Steven Stewart were acquitted on all ten counts while Scott Drexler and Eric Parker were acquitted on most counts. The Bundy supporters in the court room broke into applause immediately after the verdict was read, as prosecutors stood there sickened and stunned by the result. “They’ve been tried twice and found not guilty,” said Carol Bundy, the matriarch of the Bundy family, after the verdict was rendered. “We the people are not guilty.” This was the second time the men were tried in the court of law. Lovelien and Stewart are now free men while jurors returned no verdicts on four of Parker’s charges and hung on two charges for Drexler. Parker and Drexler are still incarcerated… Keep Reading

Jury Nullification Used To Free Libertarian Activist In Maryland

Dennis Fusaro, a libertarian activist, and Steve Waters were found not guilty by a jury of their own peers for illegal free speech. The men had sent a robocall back in 2014 to 5,000 people in Anne Arundel County, Maryland on the weekend before an important election. The robocall congratulated Democratic County Council candidate Patrick Armstrong “for his bravery in coming out of the closet” after he supported a transgender bathroom mandate. “Transgenders can now openly and freely go into any bathroom of their choice based on their confused gender identity,” the obviously satirical script for the robocall read. “Tell Patrick to continue to stand loud and proud in support for transgenders’ equal rights. While our opponent argued that children could be at risk by sexual predators with this new law, we celebrate the rights of transgenders and what this does for equality for transgenders in Maryland.” Armstrong’s Republican opponent, Michael Anthony Peroutka, employed Fusaro but denied any knowledge of the robocall. He won the election, but Fusaro’s tactics… Keep Reading

Free Speech Revoked: Former Pastor Convicted For Spreading Jury Nullification Pamphlets

In 2015, a former Big Rapids, MI pastor was arrested and charged with a felony for handing out jury nullification pamphlets outside of a county courthouse. Despite being an obvious infringement of the 1st Amendment of the Constitution, the man was still convicted of a lesser charge of misdemeanor jury tampering on Wednesday. Keith Wood, a father of eight, was disseminating information from the Fully Informed Jury Association on the sidewalk in front of the Mecosta County Courthouse in Nov. 2015. The fliers explained the rights that jurors possess in full, including the right for jurors to use their conscience when determining the result of a case. This notion, popularly known as jury nullification, has a long history of being used in the United States and was even endorsed by certain Founding Fathers. Those facts didn’t stop Mecosta county law enforcement from detaining Wood. They set his bond at an astronomical $150,000, forcing him to charge $15,000 to his credit card in order to make bail and spend Thanksgiving with… Keep Reading

Libertarians And The Christian Right: An Alliance Of Necessity

“Most libertarians think of Christian conservatives in the same lurid terms as the leftist media, if not more so: that their aim is to impose a Christian theocracy; to outlaw liquor and other means of hedonic enjoyment, and to break down bedroom doors to enforce a Morality Police upon the country: Nothing could be further from the truth: Christian conservatives are trying to fight back against a left-liberal elite that used government to assault and virtually destroy Christian values, principles, and culture.” – Dr. Murray N. Rothbard, The Religious Right: Toward a Coalition, Feb. 1993 During this time of political strife, the libertarian movement seems less stable and more up-for-grabs than ever before. We have some libertarians moving toward the alt-right and embracing the spectacle of Trumpmania while we have other libertarians gravitating toward appeasement with statists on the left in an attempt to win over Bernie backers. However, during these precarious times, we must remember to keep our perspectives. Soon, the Sanders campaign will be a distant memory.… Keep Reading
