Coup At Heritage Foundation: Freedom Caucus-aligned DeMint To Be Ousted By Establishment

Former Senator Jim DeMint is set to be imminently ousted from his position as President of the Heritage Foundation according to a new report by Politico. Heritage board members aligned with the Republican establishment are set to announce they will not renew DeMint’s contract, which ends later this year, within the coming days. During the Bush administration, the Heritage Foundation was broadly supportive of the Republican establishment, providing strong support for Bush’s foreign and domestic policies. DeMint resigned his Senate seat in 2013 in order to take his current position at the Heritage Foundation, and has since radically shifted the organization to the right. Keep Reading

Cruz Defends Freedom Caucus, Attacks Liberal Elements In White House

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) has condemned progressive figures within the White House who have been agitating against the fiscally conservative Freedom Caucus. In a Tuesday panel covered by the Texas Tribune, Cruz defended the Freedom Caucus, stating, “I will say those voices in the White House that are trying to get the White House to unload on conservatives, to unload on the Freedom Caucus, are doing the bidding of the left, of Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer, and profoundly damaging our prospects of success.” When a reporter asked him to elaborate on who specifically he was referring to, Cruz said, “whoever is encouraging the White House to go after conservative members who are working hard to save this legislation and make sure it actually lowers health insurance premiums.” Keep Reading

Freedom Caucus’ Scott Garrett To Head Up Export-Import Bank

President Trump announced on Friday that he will nominate former Rep. Scott Garrett (R-NJ) as President and Chairman of the Export-Import Bank. The Ex-Im Bank subsidizes the financing of U.S. exports, and has been criticized by free market organizations for benefiting special interests such as Boeing and General Electric. During his time in Congress, Garrett was well respected as a fiscal conservative, boasting a 95% lifetime score from the Club for Growth, despite serving in a fairly moderate district in the New York City metropolitan area. He was a member of the Freedom Caucus and the Liberty Caucus, as well as a long-time associate of Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX). Garrett ultimately lost his seat during the 2016 election, but was later said to have been considered for a position within the Federal Housing Finance Agency. Keep Reading

Libertarian Budget Director Mick Mulvaney Rising Star In Trump Administration

Budget Director Mick Mulvaney is “on the rise” within the White House, according to a report by Politico on Tuesday. “When thinking about up and comers in the administration, think less about Gary Cohn, a New York City Democrat, and more about Mulvaney.” Recent reports that Gary Cohn, the former President of Goldman Sachs, was gaining clout in the White House, concerned many conservatives. Cohn, who is close to Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, has had a tenuous relationship with former Breitbart chairman Steve Bannon, who is rumored to have been sidelined in recent weeks. Cohn is widely regarded as a centrist establishment figure, while Bannon is seen as more in line with Trump’s grassroots base. If Bannon’s stature continues to fade, Mulvaney could provide an important anti-establishment counterweight to Cohn within Trump’s inner circle, especially given Cohn is now reportedly pushing policies such as a carbon tax and revenue neutral tax reform that are in direct contradiction to the will of the Republican electorate, and the administration is already said to have scrapped the Trump campaign tax plan. Rep. Louie Gohmert: AHCA Would Make Trump a “Fraud” And “Destroy His Administration”

Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) provided some unique insight in how the ongoing conflict between the Freedom Caucus formed during a recent appearance on Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo, a FOX News program. Gohmert explained that it was establishment figures close to the President who got in his ear and told him to take a hard-line approach against the Freedom Caucus for refusing to support the American Health Care Act (AHCA). He explained exactly what took place behind the scenes. “The President agreed with us twice, and each time Priebus and Ryan said, ‘No, no, no, you can’t do that.’ He wanted to make a deal, he was ready to make a deal, and we were negotiating with Paul and Kevin McCarthy right up through Tuesday, and all of a sudden, they had a meeting and they decided we are so close to having the number we need, let’s… get the President to help us go to war with the people that defended the President when Ryan and those… Keep Reading

Freedom Caucus’s Raul Labrador Blasts Never Trumper Rep. Adam Kinzinger

Rep. Raul Labrador of Idaho, a founding member of the Freedom Caucus and a vocal critic of the failed American Health Care Act (AHCA), hit out at Illinois Rep. Adam Kinzinger on Friday after the latter released an scathing op-ed in the New York Times titled “How the Freedom Caucus Is Undermining the G.O.P.” In the op-ed, Kinzinger praised President Trump’s “good faith,” and accused the Freedom Caucus of “[refusing] to let the will of the people advance on the House floor” and “undermining the Republican agenda, and our party as a whole.” Keep Reading

Trump: “We Must Fight” The Freedom Caucus In 2018

President Donald Trump today appeared to declare war on the members of the Freedom Caucus, stating on Twitter that “the Freedom Caucus will hurt the entire Republican agenda if they don’t get on the team, & fast. We must fight them, & Dems, in 2o18.” While it is still unclear what the President meant by his remarks, the fact that he chose to group the Freedom Caucus in with the Democrats suggests that he intends to support primary challenges to Freedom Caucus members in the upcoming 2018 mid-term elections. Trump Strategist Steve Bannon Abandons Tea Party Roots, Criticizes Freedom Caucus For Health Care Stand

After the Freedom Caucus stopped House Majority Speaker Paul Ryan’s health care bill from even receiving a floor vote, conservatives and libertarians were elated, but serious consequences may be on the way if White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon’s words are any indicator. Conservatives and libertarians hoping their health care victory would result in Trump embracing their agenda have reason to be concerned. Some very choice words made by White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon regarding the Freedom Caucus to the mainstream media cast serious doubt on the likelihood of an alliance forming between limited government advocates and the White House. On Twitter, Trump stated that “Democrats are smiling in D.C. that the Freedom Caucus, with the help of Club For Growth and Heritage, have saved Planned Parenthood and OCare!” Keep Reading

New Leader For The House Freedom Caucus?

Welcome to American politics, where election season never really ends. By the time one election is close, the next year’s campaign is well underway. The battle for the soul of the House GOP is no exception. Republicans in the House of Representatives have been having it out internally since the day they took the speakership in 2011 after the 2010 Republican midterm gains. What makes this fight particularly interesting is that, unlike presidential nominations or the RNC, it gives us an insight into the Republican Party’s ability to govern. The speakership of the House of Representatives is the third highest office in the nation, and wields tremendous influence over national policy and spending, regardless of who is in the White House. It’s not just about what the GOP wants to do in theory, it tells us how they do govern in practice. That said, North Carolina Republican Mark Meadows’ recent announcement that he is seeking the most influential conservative position in the House is not too surprising. As a… Keep Reading
