Letter From England 2: Europe And The Culture War

If I were to draw up a list of the problems facing my country, and then to discuss their nature and possible solutions, I might be starting work on a rather long book. Instead, I will confine myself to what I think are the two most immediately pressing, and that are within the direct control of the British Government. These are our withdrawal from the European Union and the state of our so far uncontested culture war. I begin with Europe. When we voted, in June 2016, to leave the European Union, we were plainly willing an end without willing any means to that end. I think the consensus among those who voted to leave was that we should have a government, elected by and fully accountable to ourselves, that would set immigration and trade policies in our own interest. For various reasons, I choose not here to discuss immigration. Our most reasonable trade policy by my estimation involves free trade with the world in services and manufactured goods,… Keep Reading

Culture Wars Within The Heart Of Texas

When I was growing up in probably the reddest of red states, Texas, it was as easy to spot someone from Austin as it was to spot an NRA member, whose concealed handguns forced one to rely on their conversation rather than whether they were packing or not. Within one minute, it was apparent where the latter stood, courtesy of their hyper-aggressive views. Equally quick and equally aggressive was the unrequested political stances bellowed by Austin residents, whose home city was a leftist stronghold in a state of reliably rock-ribbed Republicans. Hence, with only a meager middle, Texas has always contained within itself the starkest example of the blue state-red state political and culture wars that are usually expressed on state versus state basis. Conservatives Under Siege – Transgendered Bathrooms And The Brilliance Of The Left’s Decoy Strategy

This article is the first in a three-part series titled “Conservatives Under Siege”. Subscribe to Liberty Conservatives Magazine or follow Joel on Facebook or Twitter to be notified of subsequent articles. From the explosion of outrage and hyperbole that violated my social media newsfeeds in the last two days, I gather that gender-confused individuals are now trying to use bathrooms to which they are not assigned. That’s unfortunate. I expect it to complicate some social norms, and potentially produce awkward situations.  It may even force some businesses or public buildings to go back to the barbaric unisex individual bathrooms still used by most small businesses nationwide. Worse yet, government may declare public restrooms to be unisex and government workers and public schoolers will be forced to join the approximately 90% of the world that doesn’t give a crap where you, you know, give a crap. Fond as I am of our distinguished American bathroom system, I also realize that the extent of this controversy is still…bathrooms. As conservative blogger Matt Walsh… Keep Reading
