President Donald Trump will begin to release details about his massive infrastructure plan this week. This is one of his most ambitious proposals, and if he is ultimately successful, it would unleash $1 trillion of public and private investment toward rebuilding America.
Trump will be speaking in the Rose Garden today about his plans to separate air traffic control operations from the Federal Aviation Administration. He will go to Ohio on Wednesday to gin up support for his plan to improve dams and lock systems. On Friday, Trump will head to the Department of Transportation where he will lobby the bureaucracy to cut red tape by expediting the approval time for changes in roads, railways, and regulations.
While there will certainly be an aspect of government involvement in this infrastructure plan, tax breaks and public-private partnerships will be emphasized in an attempt to bring down the costs to the taxpayer.
“It doesn’t matter who you are, whether you are farmer in the Midwest, or a mother driving your kids to and from school, or a worker or a college kid flying back and forth to school, you’re affected by infrastructure,” White House economic adviser Gary Cohn said to reporters.
The Associated Press reported that Cohn believes American infrastructure is “falling behind and the falling behind is affecting economic growth in the United States. The president wants to fix the problems and he doesn’t want to push these liabilities into the future.”
The President may want to fix these problems, but it remains to be seen what he can accomplish in actuality. Progressive Democrats in the House have proposed an even bolder, more profligate infrastructure spending proposal to overshadow Trump. Congressional Republicans are concerned about fiscal responsibility.
“He’s talking about a huge infrastructure program, huge increases for defense, other huge expenditures, all while cutting taxes. All of which I like, but you’ve got to find a way to not blow the deficit to creation,” Rep. Hal Rogers (R-KY) said back in March. “It’s a big challenge.”
