Julian Assange and Wikileaks are continuing their dump of #Vault7 documents, a treasure trove of information that is displaying the true hacking capabilities of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). Earlier today, Wikileaks exposed Marble, a sophisticated program giving the CIA the capability to leave a digital footprint mimicking a foreign government after conducting clandestine hacking operations.
In their press release regarding Marble, Wikileaks stated the following, “Marble is used to hamper forensic investigators and anti-virus companies from attributing viruses, trojans and hacking attacks to the CIA… It is ‘[D]esigned to allow for flexible and easy-to-use obfuscation” as “string obfuscation algorithms (especially those that are unique) are often used to link malware to a specific developer or development shop.'”
Marble contains text examples in the language of English as well as Russian, Arabic, Chinese Korean, and Farsi. “This would permit a forensic attribution double game, for example by pretending that the spoken language of the malware creator was not American English, but Chinese, but then showing attempts to conceal the use of Chinese, drawing forensic investigators even more strongly to the wrong conclusion,” Wikileaks explained.
These revelations could have ramifications that stifle ongoing investigations regarding the legitimacy of President Trump. As Russian hacking allegations continue to be floated by Democrats, certain Neoconservatives and the mainstream media, these revelations put the entire question in jeopardy. Trump’s opponents are scrambling to find hard evidence proving that Russian interference swayed last year’s election, but the immense power of the CIA—now public knowledge—harms the credibility of investigators.
With the CIA now revealed to have the capability of mimicking the Russian government while conducting hacking operations, serious doubt will inevitably be cast on all evidence gathered indicating a Russian hacking conspiracy. Wikileaks plans to release more documents as a part of their #Vault7 series in the weeks to come.
