George Takei Should Become a Libertarian

George Takei is an actor best known for playing Hikaru Sulu on Star Trek and has more recently become a famous Internet personality. He is a personable human being with a great sense of humor. He is one who also makes his political views known, which to a degree, are interesting. He is a Democrat and a vocal supporter of the party.

Takei, who is openly gay, also has the unique and unfortunate experience of living in an internment camp.

Traditionally in American politics, the LGBT crowd are known for being fairly liberal and registered Democrat. A lot of this has to do with the two party system and the false notion that answers exist nowhere else. Republicans traditionally are social conservative and thus opposed to LGBT rights, leaving the LGBT community only one other place to go.

But the Democratic Party is not the only alternative.

Takei has been outspoken against Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, who has made a number of controversial policy proposals, including a ban on Muslims. Given that Takei was forcefully relocated when he was younger, he can speak to the era. In an MSNBC interview, he noted that war and racial hysteria contributed to internment, as well as failed political leadership.

And he’s absolutely correct. The problem is that it was the Democrats who legalized this behavior. It was a Democratic President who presented a racist policy against American citizens of a certain background and forced them into camps. It was a Supreme Court packed with Democratic appointees that told Fred Korematsu his rights didn’t matter because Pearl Harbor apparently justified being afraid of everyone of Japanese descent.

In modern times, Hillary Clinton has taken donations in the past from Saudi Arabia, a government that has deep connections to both major political parties. The Saudis are notoriously opposed to LGBT rights, even sentencing people to death for homosexual activity. One case includes dozens of men being sentenced to 14,200 lashes for behaving like women. The trial took place behind closed doors and without defense lawyers.

The Republican Party may be carrying a heavy tone right now that is certainly of concern, but the Democratic Party carries a lot of blame. If there is a fear of Trump banning a religion, group, or race, that fear could become a reality because of Democratic former President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Roosevelt enacted the relocation policy and his packed court backed him up.

Takei is a smart man and, being an intelligent and involved human being, he should consider libertarianism. Libertarians believe in freedom, regardless of race, gender, religion, orientation, etc. Human rights are human rights.

Libertarians are opposed to forced relocation on multiple grounds. First, judging an entire group of people on the actions of one, or even a few, is wrong. Each individual should be judged on their individual merits. Was George Takei guilty of espionage because the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor? Absolutely not. So why was he forced into an internment camp?

Libertarians also believe in the Non-Aggression Principle, which essentially states that aggression is wrong. Both Takei and the other innocent Japanese-Americans had not provoked the United States government or any other person, thus should not have been detained or relocated.

Democrats and Republicans differ from libertarians, but themselves are alike. Readiness Exercise 1984, or Red 84, was a classified scenario involving the mass detention of citizens deemed a national security risk. The scenario was first revealed by the Miami Herald in 1987, a scenario that could legally occur because of Roosevelt’s packed Supreme Court.

This obviously is not to say that all Democrats and Republicans are horrible racists who want to put people in camps. That is false. But the establishments in both parties are a part of a political elite with little regard for the common individual. Our political arena feeds on dissension. The recent issue with Colin Kaepernick refusing to stand for the National Anthem illustrates this. While most reasonable Americans agree there is a race issue in America to some degree, we’re all divided about respect for a song.

Democrats and Republicans feed on dividing Americans. This election cycle, the Libertarian Party is experiencing higher than normal poll numbers because they’re running above the partisan fray. The libertarian philosophy is becoming more mainstream because Americans of all types want to live their lives free, without constant interference from government and politics.

Yes, Mr. Takei, there is a great deal to take issue with in the Republican Party. But there is with the Democratic Party, as well. Look elsewhere, or even become unenrolled. The one thing greater than political parties is principle. Stand firm on them above all.

  • It is not about his perversion it is about the destruction of a free and moral society to get people engage in as much bad behavior as possible satifying every desire so people mess up their lives and need government to take care of them.
