Ackman’s Quest To Ruin Herbalife Is Cronyism At Its Worst

For five years, billionaire hedge fund manager Bill Ackman has attempted to bring Herbalife, a global nutrition and weight management company, to the brink of financial ruin—all for his personal financial gain. Fortune reported that, back in 2012, Ackman’s Pershing Square Capital Management took a $1 billion short position in Herbalife’s stock, expressing his belief that Herbalife was a “pyramid scheme.” He claimed that he would give proof the very next day. In an apparent victory for Ackman’s short position, Herbalife’s stock lowered 10 percent within six seconds, causing the company to issue a temporary trading halt. Ackman offered a… Keep Reading

CFPB’s Unconstitutional Assault On Private Business Harms Consumers

Under the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s (CFPB) new rule, private companies would be banned from fully utilizing mandatory arbitration clauses. In one article, CNN teeth-clinchingly claimed that under the bill formerly known as the American Health Care Act (AHCA), rape and domestic violence could qualify as pre-existing conditions. In another, Salon asserted that women who undergo C-sections could be “monetarily punished” under the bill. Despite this propaganda campaign, President Trump and a Republican-controlled Congress are working hard behind the… Keep Reading

Furman University Students Rally Against Trump Executive Order

Students at Furman University rallied against Trump’s order on immigration in February at the “Students For Solidarity Rally.” The event, held on the steps of Furman’s James B. Duke Library, was billed as “a showing of public opposition to the Executive Order banning refugees and Muslims from 7 countries from entering the United States.” Prior to the rally, a petition circulated online, designed to “urge SGA to issue a statement regarding the security of students,” referring to Furman’s Student Government Association (SGA). The petition garnered 131 signatures out of its goal of 200, stating, “it is expected that SGA responds… Keep Reading
